AN EXPERIENCE IN A LIFETIME

I had been to Germany for a summer school program on Automotive and Mobility studies in RWTH Aachen University a week ago. I would like to share my experience there with you all.

India’s progress towards renewable energy usage is only a steep slope but, in Germany, the government mainly focuses to implement every available renewable energy resource in the Automotive and Mobility sectors.

Our 12 days course had a detailed study structure comprising battery storage system, electric power trains and traffic management systems. The city of Aachen is already a planned architecture for effective traffic management. But, they still are working to make it more comfortable for the cyclists and pedestrians.

We also had an opportunity to take a look at the BMW I-3 vehicle which is fully electrical. It takes 8 hours to charge it completely with the household voltage supply of 230 volts. At charging stations, it takes only 3 hours. We got to know that its range can extend up to 150kmph. We even got a chance to drive and experience the feel of being inside it.

The power source for the electricity requirements is mainly from wind mills and tidal parks. Many countries like Austria, Netherlands, Belgium etc. are also some of the main suppliers of electricity to Germany.

Every student was also given a chance to drive the Go-carts. There were three Go-carts which were based respectively on internal combustion, electrical and hybrid principles. IC Go-cart was very easy to drive and was a bit conventional. Electric Go-cart was popular among the students for its smoothness and hybrid Go-cart for its power.

After being completely defeated in the Second World War, no one would have imagined that Germany will be in such a good position by both economical and political standards. We got to know that Germany wants to reduce the usage of non renewable energy resources by 90%.

The one saying by Professor Daniel Kleigner:

“In 2006, no one would have trusted that we will be using Smart phones in 2016. Same way, in 2025 you will see most of the cars in Germany running on electricity which many don’t believe today. “
